Welcome to Year 3

Mrs Bicheno, Mrs Houghton and Mrs Pye

26th  March

Design Technology

On Tuesday, year 3 were very busy making their picture frames.  We had previously designed four frames and chose our favourite.  We then had to use our maths skills in measuring to mark out our strip of wood so we knew where to cut.  Some of us found sawing very challenging and others had very good sawing skills.  Lots of children told us how much their arm was aching and how much they were sweating!!!

Here we are cutting the wood.  There will be more pictures to follow showing our finished designs!

Colchester Castle 21st March 2024

Wow! What a great trip we had travelling back in time to see real Roman buildings and artefacts.  We particularly liked seeing the skulls of Roman criminals with spike holes and seeing different weapons. We had fun working as a team to build a Roman Villa or Celtic round house. The adults all agreed living in a Roman villa would have been far more comfortable!

Underneath Colchester Castle (which was built in the Norman Era) we got to sit in the real Roman tunnels that the current castle is built on and learn about the destruction of the city caused by Boudicca.

As always, Year 3 were wonderfully behaved and had a great day (even if they did think the coach and lunch were highlights!).

Easter Reflection Workshop 20th March 2024

Year 3 were lucky enough to take part in the Easter Reflection Workshop led by Billericay Churches Together (BCT). WE had a great time reflecting on the Easter story and how the messages of forgiveness, happiness and sadness can be considered and shown in different ways. We had fun creating flags, play doh creations and a tree of joy.

WORLD BOOK DAY - 7th March 2024

Year 3 looked amazing on World Book Day.  Well done to pupils and parents for the huge effort you put in to creating so many amazing costumes.  Green class had a shared reading session with Red Class from KS1 and Emerald Class had shared reading session with Gold Class from KS2.  We made mosaic designs of our favourite book or book character.  We enjoyed looking at everyone's different potatoes.  What do you think?

15th February

This week has been our multi-cultural week.  Year 3 learnt all about Canada.  Well done everyone who completed the optional homework.  We had some awesome projects brought in.  If you would like to see them, please come in on a Friday and see our display.

We all wrote a non-chronological report on Canada, used water colours to create our own Ted Harrison designs, tasted maple syrup,  sang a traditional Canadian Folk song and learnt to dance a traditional Canadian folk dance.  What a busy week!  Here are some photos of our fun time!

Here are our Ted Harrison designs

Here is some of Green class enjoying some maple syrup.

This term in in PE we have been learning about yoga. Strengthening our inner core!  Here are some of our poses.....

Forming the tree pose.

Pop into our class to see our final designs.

24th January

As part of our Romans topic, we have been studying Roman Mosaics.  We then researched a more modern maker of Mosaics called Gaudi.  After our researching, we had to state which was our favourite design and why and then design our own mosaic tile in that style.  First we rolled and moulded our clay and left it dry.

20th December - Last day of Autumn Term 2023

Well done year 3!  We have completed your first term in Key Stage 2 - and haven't you done well?

Thank you so very much to the generous gifts you have given the staff in year 3, we felt very overwhelmed.  We would like to wish you all a very Merry and Restful Christmas.  Year 3 pupils - Recharge those batteries for lots of new learning in January!

Here are some pictures from our Christmas Party afternoon today.

Getting involved in a game of monopoly.

We played lots of different games.

Wearing Christmassy headbands.

Creating pictures and chilling out!

19th December  - Christmas Dinner Day!

There was a lot of cracker pulling and joke telling today in our dining hall.  The Sunnymede staff served Christmas dinner and the children wore festive hats.  Thank you to the kitchen staff for a delicious Christmas dinner - there were lots of empty plates!

6th December

Today, we took a short walk to Billericay Baptist Church to talk to the School's Ministry about the first Christmas.  The ladies had organised lots of different and fun activities all related to the first Christmas and the children had a lovely time.  One child said "This has been the best day ever!"  Thank you to Sue for the Christmas book donation for our classroom libraries.

22nd November

Today, we learnt about different types of skeletons and classified animals into vertebrates and invertebrates.  Some of us learnt the difference between an exoskeleton and an endoskeleton is.  Here is some of our classifying.

22nd November

Today has been a busy day.  We started with our weaving.  Everyone had to concentrate really hard and remember the over and under technique.  There were lots of instructions to follow and the children learnt that sometimes things take a long time....but the end result is worth it!  We hope you like them when the children bring them home for Christmas!  Here were are working hard to create them today.

8th November

We had a Winter Arts Morning today.  Every year group created a different style of winter picture.  Year 3 used white crayons to create the tree and the moon and water colours to create all the different shades of blue.  We found it a challenge to not use brush strokes, just dab on the water colour.  Emily said, 'It was a bit tricky, then I got better, then I got worse!  It got easier as I understood a bit more.  It was good to learn a new technique."  We had two trial runs before we created  our final print.

20th October.

This term in art, we have been studying three artists who print their work; Andy Warhol, Schatzi Brown and William Morris.  We created our own design and then drew it on a polystyrene tile.  It was then time to use rollers to print our own design.  You can see our tile and final design below.

19th October

In Science, we have been learning about light and dark.  We learnt that the sun is a source of light and when light is blocked by an opaque shape it creates a shadow.  Here we are  creating shadows in the sun and trying to draw some of them.

25th September

Building Stonehenge

We have been studying Stonehenge. Why did the Stone Age build it?  Is it in a specific position?  What kind of stones did they use?

We then built our own versions out of biscuits.  The hardest part of the lesson was actually not eating the biscuits!!

16th September

Stone Age Archaeologists - Today, year three went digging for clues from the past.  We discovered some Stone Age artefacts and discussed what they might have been used for many years ago.  We also got very dirty from all that digging!

Stone Age Day 2023
