PE Days
Reading is a key part of learning and through a range of texts, we hope children become immersed and enjoy reading for pleasure.
Here is a list of recommended reads for Year 3 to help inspire and excite children.

Roman villa building
Down to the vaults
This spring term year 3 had the amazing opportunity to visit Colchester castle! We had a fantastic time. The children got to marvel at Roman artefacts, Stone Age costumes and even got to use a Roman chariot simulator! The museum houses coins, vases, mosaics and even replica armour for the children to try on. The most special part of the day was the descent underground into the vaults! Once a Roman temple visited by Boudicca herself, the children got to move carefully from chamber to chamber ducking under low doorways in the depths of the castle. They listened to stories of battle and glory as well as getting the chance to look at replica shields and swords. This truly was a day to remember and ends our Roman topic with a bang!
Traditional clothing
Soldier formation

Stories in the vaults
WORLD BOOK DAY 2026
We had a wonderful day on March 5th in year 3! We all dressed up as various book characters and took time to share with everyone who we had dressed up as. We looked at a range of different stories and discussed how characters can make a story truly unique. We listened to extracts from Charlie and the chocolate factory and The Chronicles of Narnia. During one activity we designed ourselves as book characters! The enrichment during this session was great, the children all created new characters and it was fantastic to see so many of them desperate to write stories to go with the characters and worlds they had created.
Happy Book Day! Keep reading.
Nicky from the Essex fire safety service gave Green and Emerald classes a presentation on keeping safe at home with fire hazards. The children took part in an interactive session identifying potential risks and were given homework for their grownups. What an informative morning!

Straight back into learning this cold, dark January. The children have been using magnets to see which materials are magnetic. Everyone had a chance to test a variety of materials. What great scientists!
Class Christmas parties were the place to be on the last day of term! We danced, we played, we laughed. Merry Christmas!
Reindeers came to visit Sunnymede Primary School just before Christmas. The children got to see some antlers and sat in a sleigh. Magical!
In year 3 the children have been choosing different friends to play with each day. For friendship week, we discussed what it means to be a good friend, the children all designed a friend they would like to have. This was a very thoughtful and reflective process. Well done year 3!
Dance Festival
Year 3 enjoyed a chilly walk up to The Billericay School for a dance festival morning. The year 11 students directed and engaged with the children teaching them a fantastic routine. They had so much fun, we danced all the way back to Sunnymede.
D&T
The children have loved every moment of our design and technology topic - making pop-up cards! Many were so inspired; they continued to make pop-up cards at home and bring them in! What great enthusiasm.
October gymnasts
During P.E. this autumn term we have been doing gymnastics. Pupils have been working hard to practice different ways to travel and balance. The children used hoops and mats to develop sequences showing off their skills in pairs. We used apparatus too! All of the year group performed sensibly demonstrating that they understood the meaning of safe balances and soft landings. Well done year 3!
October - Autumn fun in Year 3.
We are scientists
During our weekly science lessons we have been studying light and shadow. The children carried out experiments outside in the autumn sunshine measuring how their shadows move and change throughout the day.
Inside we looked at using torches to make light and shadow, we did experiments to test which materials were opaque, translucent and transparent.
STONE AGE DAY
SEPTEMBER 2025
What a day! Year 3 enjoyed an excellent day in the Stone Age! Our visiting Stone Age expert provided a wonderfully immersive workshop for all of us!
The children were able to understand how early man evolved and changed over time. They explored hunting - looking at weapons and animals. We got to see how animal fur could be used for clothing and warmth.
The children got to witness a campfire being made using sticks, then instruments developed by Stone Age people. We got to experience life with mammoths and managed to catch one!
After lunch, the children were able to see the journey from the Stone Age to Roman times. They understood how the early people were peaceable but as the human race grew and changed, land was fought over, and eventually various tribes became enemies.
The classes had battles and races between them. They built their own Stone Henge in groups and even managed to find Iron in an imaginary mine. A day to remember, what a great start to year 3.
