Cooking is a vital part of our Design Technology curriculum and baking or cooking at home is a great way to support healthy eating, hygiene and culinary skills. Have a look through the websites below for some inspiration and recipes. Send any photos of your bakes into the admin email and we can display them on our website!
At Sunnymede, we follow a evaluate, design, make and evaluate cycle for each unit we complete. Design Technology can be completed at home in various ways:
evaluate existing structures
propose how to improve structures and designs
design a new product or component
make a prototype and test it out to see if it works

CLAYTIME in EYFS
Designing a diva lamp for the festival of lights.
Using fingers to manipulate the clay into shape. Well done!
Using tools to shape the clay.
The children in EYFS focus on strengthening their fine motor skills once they start school. Design & Technology supports this aspect of their learning as well as promoting a sense of freedom and creativity. Whether they're manipulating clay to make clay diva lamps, crafting cards or using recycled material to make topic related models - you can be certain they're focused and having fun too!
Year 1 - Designers of the future
In year 1 the children created houses from shoeboxes and recycling materials.
They planned features they wanted to include in house and chose materials that could be used with their partners.
-
They used skills such as cutting, sticking and evaluated their models after. What a team!
Year 2 to the rescue!
In groups the children planned their fire engines, they thought about the use of wheels and axels.
They all look fabulous! Can you see the ladder? Hose? Lights? Well done year 2.
YEAR 3-Craft
Year 3 have been busy making pop-up cards in Design & Technology lessons. They made various prototypes of different pop-up mechanisms. Some children even made their own prototypes at home! Look at their lovely, finished pieces.
YEAR 4 - Electrical Components
The children have been working on making their own Christmas electrical decorations. Having been studying electrical circuits in science, they were able to link their skills to design a circuit to light up their own stained-glass windows. The pupils carefully used craft knives to shape their intricate detailed designs resulting in engaging decorations!
The children have worked super hard in year 5 on designing and creating cam models.
A cam is a wheel attached to a crankshaft. A follower bar follows the cam around its circumference to create the motion. Cams can be used in steam engines, carousels and now...year 5 models! Well done!
