Reading is a key part of learning and through a range of texts, we hope children become immersed and enjoy reading for pleasure.
Here is a list of recommended reads for Year 2 to help inspire and excite children.
29th April 2025 - Norsey Woods Trip
We have had an amazing day today! The sun was out and it was perfect conditions for a day in Norsey Woods with Lauren as part of our Forest Schools visit. First, we turned East along Greenway, then we turned North onto Outwood Common Road and walked uphill until we reached Break Egg Hill. We met Lauren, who showed us all of the different activities - a mud kitchen, jewellery making using parts of the Elder tree, den building, minibeasts and leaf identification, a hammock to swing in and walking along the slack line. We finished our day with roasting marshmallows over a small fire - delicious!

Thank you to all of the children who behaved perfectly and represented Sunnymede Primary very well.
As teachers, it was lovely to just observe our year 2 classes simply playing and working together. The children were so disappointed when their time at forest school ended and we had to return to school.

22nd April 2025
We hope you all had a lovely Easter break. The weather was perfect for days out and playing in the garden or the park and the children are full of energy and beans for their final term in Year 2.
In our Science lesson today, we designed and created our own microhabitat in the form of a small allotment. We planted a tomato and strawberry plant, plus planted some radish, lettuce, and cornflower seeds and even managed to use the runner bean plant from last term's science work. You may notice we have recycled some old CDs and used them to protect our seeds from hungry birds. You can watch our mini allotment grow over the next term when you collect your child at the end of the day. Here are some pictures of our busy, green fingered afternoon.
WORLD BOOK DAY 2025
We had a great day celebrating World Book Day. The children looked amazing in all of their fantastic outfits. Thank you for helping them look so good and for helping with their masks. We had so many brilliant designs, it was very difficult to choose one winner per class. We did some World Book Day quizzes and activities. Just before lunch, we shared books with some of our Year 5 friends.

Tuesday 4th March
In our Science Lessons, we investigated which ball was the bounciest. We used balls made from different materials and predicted which one we thought would bounce the most. We made sure we dropped them from the same height to ensure a fair test.

23rd January 2025
In PSHE, we have been setting our own goals and learning that sometimes, we need others around us for their support. We have talked about working together to achieve a goal and how we can get the best results. One of our activites was to work cooperatively to create a marble run.
January 2025
This term, in our computing lessons, we have been writing algorithms for our BeeBots. We have enjoyed working as part of a team to write instructions for our BeeBot and have even created algorithms for when there is an obstacle.
20th December - Last day and Christmas parties!
Well, we made it to Christmas. It has been such a long term and our year two children have worked so hard. Well done everyone!

Christmas Activities
At our party we had, a dance competition, played Christmas corners, a seated pass the ball over your head and finally a race of passing the ball under your legs. We had such a lot of fun!

19th December Christmas dinner and Christmas Jumper Day
The children (and adults in Key Stage 1) were treated to a delicious Christmas Lunch today, thanks to our amazing catering team. We were so impressed by all the good manners of pleases and thank yous when the children were collecting their lunch.
Wednesday 18th December
Recently in our Maths lessons, we have been learning about different 2-D and 3-D shapes. Today, we put our pencils down and consolidated our learning through festive pictures, made only with 2-D shapes. What do you think of our pictures? Which one is your favourite?
Tuesday 17th December
Today in science we designed an investigation to see where ice would melt the quickest. Miss Gray froze some plastic men in a pot and we discussed different places we could place the pots to observe which place was the best to melt the ice. As a class, we discussed our prediction, method and the equipment we would need. Some pupils discussed how we could make this experiment a fair test. Ask your child about the results of our investigation.

14th December - Christmas Pantomime Day!
This morning, Key Stage 1 were treated to a fantastic pantomime. We watched the story of Cinderella. It was a very noisy morning ....Oh no it wasn't! Oh yes it was!

Wednesday 12th December
This term in PE, we have been practising our yoga techniques. To keep our balance we have had to keep strong control of our muscles and breath steadily. We learnt many different animal poses and created yoga flows, concentrating on our transitions from pose to pose.
Tuesday 4th December
Here we are doing some computing. We have been using the on line programme Chrome Music Lab, it's a lot of fun. Our focus has been exploring music through IT.
Monday 25th November
Today, we had a really good music lesson. First we responded to the music by finding the pulse and moving to the beat. We then learnt how to improvise using 3 notes firstly using C, D, E and then G, A, B. We tried very hard to think about using long and short sounds. Our singing was amazing and everyone joined in.
Monday 14th - Friday 18th October
This week was our Design Technology week. Our project was to design and make a fire engine with working wheels, an axle and chassis. The children were put into groups of 4 to share their own designs, then create a joint design of an ultimate fire engine. We then created our own axles and created washers to stop the wheels from falling off. After making a chassis and attaching it to our chassis, we created the body of our fire engine. What do you think about our creations?
Tuesday 15th October
Saffron class took part in a Dance Workshop organised by the year 10 pupils from The Billericay School. The girls showed us a dance they had been working on. Then we split into groups, and learnt some of the dance and then we added our own extra moves. All the children had a great time, thank you Billericay school for working with us.
Friday 11th October
Year 2 were investigating in science today. We had to find out which material was best to use for a bag. We tested paper, fabric and plastic. We all learnt about predicting what may happen and some children learnt how to make it a fair test. You might be interested to hear about our results!
Tuesday 8th October
In our RE lessons, we have been learning about stories from the Bible and how Jesus showed kindness. We invited our local Reverend to come in and talk to us about how Christians show kindness in our community. We had a very interesting chat and the children enjoyed asking Reverend Gary Bott, lots of questions about religion and himself. Thank you for visiting us Reverend Gary.
Welcome to Year 2!
It has been a busy two weeks for our Year 2 children. They have all settled in very well and are getting used to the new timetable. We are looking forward to an exciting year!
The Great Fire of London Experience
On Wednesday 11th September, year 2 participated in a Great Fire of London Workshop. Every single child had an important job to do when we all reenacted the events of the Plague and The Great Fire. We all had an amazing time and the actors really helped bring our learning to life. Have a look at our fantastic workshop.
13th September
Today in our Science lesson, we continued our study of different materials. Our task was to organise materials into groups according to a criteria. Here are some pictures of our different criteria.

You could look around your home and find different materials for the children to describe as smooth, rough, flexible, rigid, waterproof, transparent or breakable.
