Reading is a key part of learning and through a range of texts, we hope children become immersed and enjoy reading for pleasure.
Here is a list of recommended reads for Year 2 to help inspire and excite children.

We also listened to a traditional Swedish folk tale called 'The Three Wishes' and then created our own written work based on the story. Today, we learnt all about the important Midsummer Festival. Our helpers brought in a smaller version of a Midsummer Pole for us to help decorate. Then, we make our own mini versions of a Midsummer Pole. We then learnt some traditional Swedish songs which children sing whilst dancing around the pole. This is what we performed to you on the Friday Carnival.
On Wednesday afternoon, after our Midsummer Pole making, we had our food tasting session. We tried Swedish Meatballs, Cinnamon Buns, Lingonberry Jam and Knackerbrod. We had a lot of mixed opinions over the different foods. Well done to everyone who tried the different tastes.

On Monday, we started our Carnival of Culture week by learning facts about the country of Sweden. We made a fact book full of the facts we learnt and then looked more in-depth at the Vikings.
On Tuesday, we were very lucky to have the help from two of our year 2 Mums who are from Sweden. They told us lots more information and answered lots of our questions. In the morning , they taught us how to make Chokladbollar (Chocolate Balls). The children loved making them and loved tasting them even more!! They are quick and simple to make and lots of children asked for the recipe to go on the website. Good luck trying to make them at home!
Good luck making them!
Even bigger good luck trying not to eat them all at once!!!
Before lunch, we took part in a game of Swedish 5 Kamp. This involved wellington boot throwing, spinning round a stick, cartwheel races and sack races. Here we are having fun!

29th April 2025 - Norsey Woods Trip
We have had an amazing day today! The sun was out and it was perfect conditions for a day in Norsey Woods with Lauren as part of our Forest Schools visit. First, we turned East along Greenway, then we turned North onto Outwood Common Road and walked uphill until we reached Break Egg Hill. We met Lauren, who showed us all of the different activities - a mud kitchen, jewellery making using parts of the Elder tree, den building, minibeasts and leaf identification, a hammock to swing in and walking along the slack line. We finished our day with roasting marshmallows over a small fire - delicious!
Thank you so much to Lauren at Forest Schools for helping us have such an awesome day.
Thank you so much to all of the parent and family helpers who came with us. Without you, we would not be able to go on these trips.
Thank you to all of the children who behaved perfectly and represented Sunnymede Primary very well.
As teachers, it was lovely to just observe our year 2 classes simply playing and working together. The children were so disappointed when their time at forest school ended and we had to return to school.
Here are some pictures of our day.....

VE Day
Today, we came to school dressed in red, white and blue to remember and celebrate VE day. It was a lovely sight to see in the assembly hall where we learnt more about VE day and we even sung a celebration song from World War II. Some of the children in year 2 brought in artefacts and pictures of their family who took part in the war and we were all very interested to learn new things about World War II. The kitchen staff kindly made us delicious cakes to celebrate the day.
Here we are all red, white and blue!
Balancing on the slack line.
Building dens!
Hunting for bugs - we found lots of ants, centipedes, spiders, woodlice and worms.
We also found lots of different microhabitats.
Making necklaces and bracelets from Elder tree twigs and branches.
Anyone for a goblet of warm, sticky mud hot chocolate? Or a chocolate brownie from our mud kitchen?
Lunch time!
There were so many beautiful bluebells out in bloom. The forest had a blue carpet.
Climbing on the trees.
Chilling in the hammocks!
Roasting Marshmallows on a hot campfire
Time to say goodbye after an exhausting but amazing day!
22nd April 2025
We hope you all had a lovely Easter break. The weather was perfect for days out and playing in the garden or the park and the children are full of energy and beans for their final term in Year 2.
In our Science lesson today, we designed and created our own microhabitat in the form of a small allotment. We planted a tomato and strawberry plant, plus planted some radish, lettuce, and cornflower seeds and even managed to use the runner bean plant from last term's science work. You may notice we have recycled some old CDs and used them to protect our seeds from hungry birds. You can watch our mini allotment grow over the next term when you collect your child at the end of the day. Here are some pictures of our busy, green fingered afternoon.
WORLD BOOK DAY 2025
We had a great day celebrating World Book Day. The children looked amazing in all of their fantastic outfits. Thank you for helping them look so good and for helping with their masks. Just before lunch, we shared books with some of our Year 5 friends.

Someone made monsters for their socks!
And someone else made a Minecraft helmet.
Tuesday 4th March
In our Science Lessons, we investigated which ball was the bounciest. We used balls made from different materials and predicted which one we thought would bounce the most. We made sure we dropped them from the same height to ensure a fair test.
Ask your child which ball was the bounciest!

Today in science we designed an investigation to see where ice would melt the quickest. Miss Gray froze some plastic men in a pot and we discussed different places we could place the pots to observe which place was the best to melt the ice. As a class, we discussed our prediction, method and the equipment we would need. Some pupils discussed how we could make this experiment a fair test. Ask your child about the results of our investigation.

The children were put into groups of 4 to share their own designs, then create a joint design of an ultimate fire engine. We then created our own axles and created washers to stop the wheels from falling off. After making a chassis and attaching it to our chassis, we created the body of our fire engine. What do you think about our creations?

Today in our Science lesson, we continued our study of different materials. Our task was to organise materials into groups according to a criteria. Here are some pictures of our different criteria.
These materials are transparent and breakable.
These materials are rigid and rough.
These materials are smooth.
You could look around your home and find different materials for the children to describe as smooth, rough, flexible, rigid, waterproof, transparent or breakable.
