Wow, what an end of year show the year 6s put on! As teachers, we are so proud of the commitment the children put into their roles; it was a show thoroughly enjoyed by all. We were really transported back into the 1950s with all the fabulous rock 'n' roll costumes and the groovy hand jives.
The annual, epic year 6 water fight took place on a sunny Thursday afternoon in the penultimate week of term. Excitement was high, the water guns were filled and the sun was shining – the perfect combination for the annual tradition. We will try not to take all the attacks on us teachers too personally...
As a reward to commemorate the end of their SATs and their time drawing to a close at Sunnymede, Year 6 went on a very special trip to Warner Bros Harry Potter Studios. As you can imagine, the children - and staff - were very excited for this visit and as usual, the children behaved exceptionally on the trip. It was fascinating to get the behind-the-scenes experience and the pupils had a very magical time. Have a look at what we got up to in the gallery.

March - World Book Day
On Thursday 7th March, Sunnymede celebrated World Book Day. Across the day, we saw excellent, inventive costumes and creative optional homework potatoes. Thank you for the efforts at home to get the children ready for the day - we thought they looked awesome!
A Murder Most Unladylike!
Casting some spells
Violet and Alice
The Hunger Games tributes
Platinum's potatoes
Gold's potatoes
As one of our activities, we did some shared reading with another year group: Gold read with Green class while Platinum read with Orange class. It was so lovely seeing the year six pupils read and talk about their books with the younger year groups.
We also planned a dinner party and decided which book characters were coming; we left clues on the dinner plate to show who was there. In pairs, we then tried to guess which guests had been.
March - Mathematics Enrichment Morning
On Monday 4th, we were challenged by our teachers with an engineering task: creating a balanced hanging sculpture. We used our estimation skills to find equal weights, our mathematical terminology and problem solving skills whenever we advanced to the next level. We had great fun along the way and all had some success.
Have a look at our outcomes.
The week beginning 12th February, we had a multicultural week across our primary school where different year groups learnt about the cultures and customs of different countries. In Year six, we learnt all about New Zealand. Firstly, we began by learning about some of the key history and geography of New Zealand. We also learnt some Mauri phrases. Did you know 'Morena' means morning in Māori (one of the two widely spoken languages in New Zealand)?
During our PE lesson, we learnt the Haka: a war dance used to show strength and unity. We loved learning this fierce dance and definitely frightened our teachers and class mates with our fearsome expressions and chants!
To help understand the culture of the Mauri tribe, we looked at the jewellery they had and what it symbolised. Inspired by this, we used clay to create our own pieces. Can you see any similarities and differences between the pieces?
Finally, we had our dress up day on Thursday. It was great to see the year group awash with red, white and blue. We really hope everybody enjoyed learning about the culture of New Zealand.

December - Ancient Greece
Across this term, we have been studying the Ancient Greeks. We have learnt about their way of life, the impact they've had on today and about famous individuals. To help us understand the significance of their buildings, we looked at some Ancient Greek temples and amphitheaters and studied their different features.
After learning about the Acropolis and the Parthenon, we had a go at building our own temples from recycled materials - how do they compare to the original?
November: Geography - Volcanoes and Earthquakes
We have been learning about volcanoes and earthquakes this half term. We have had some fascinating questions asked during this unit and we have learnt some interesting facts. Have a look at some of the wonderful work we have produced...
Did you know 90% of world's earthquakes happen on the Ring of Fire and this is where 75% of the world's volcanoes can be found?
We learnt about the formation of the Earth and how this links to earthquakes and volcanoes. On our Earth's crust, we have tectonic plates which are linked to volcanoes and volcanoes.
October - Jumanji
Over this half term, we have been studying the picture book Jumanji by Chris Van Allsburg. We used clips from the 1995 film to help inspire us to write description, suspense and action. After working on these skills in isolation, we worked on building these into our own stories of Jumanji. We published these complete with a front cover and blurb and even shared these with the Year 2 classes.
Year 6 had an adventurous, yet tiring, start to their year with the residential to Hilltop in Sheringham forest. We challenged ourselves, shared many laughs and created many fond moments which we hope the pupils will cherish forever. Climbing, the super swing, archery and the zipwire were just a few of the fantastic activities we could try.
After sorting through and uploading hundreds of photos, we have put some onto our gallery tab, which is located at the top of our webpage or you can click on the button below.
Welcome to our year group class page. Here you will find monthly updates of what the children are learning and doing in school, useful links to websites we use in school and resources to support you. We have had a fantastic first few weeks back in school and have been so impressed with the pupil's attitude and work ethic. Thank you for those who were able to attend our meet the teacher session; a copy of the PowerPoint is attached above. We are in the process of sifting through many photos of Hilltop and we will be publishing these on our website page soon - watch this space!
