February 2025
The Year 5 and 6 members of the Sunnymede choir made a return trip to visit our friends of the Sunnydays Senior Group. We performed a selection of songs from the BSMA that we are rehearsing for, including New York New York, Scarborough Fair and Africa. We even taught the group the sign language for the song Kookaburra. It was so lovely to see young and old sharing their learning and singing together. The choir then read some of their reading book to the group and had a little chat with them before returning to school. We had a great time and the choir were keen to know if we were returning again!

3rd December 2024
The year 5 and 6 choir members, visited the Sunnydays Seniors Group at the Billericay Baptist Church on Thynne Road. The girls sang a mixture of traditional and more modern Christmas songs and our audience joined us with the chorus! We had a little chat with the group members and sang happy birthday to one of the ladies who was turning 99! It was such a worthwhile visit for both the children and our senior audience. The girls felt they had done something special today and are very keen to return.

Today, Sunnymede Primary took children from Key Stage 1 and the Key Stage 2 choir to sing at Barleylands Christmas Fair. The weather was kind and not too cold or wet. The children sang beautifully and certainly got everyone in the Christmas mood. Our year 6 children also read some festive poems.
26th June 2024
Well done to the Key Stage 2 recorder group, who performed in assembly today. We treated the rest of the school to the songs 'Old MacDonald had a Farm', 'Hot Cross Buns' and 'Ode to Joy'. You have worked really hard all year and have been very committed recorder players.
21st June 2024
Today, Sunnymede Primary music was en'rich'ed by our special visitor Jeff Rich, former drummer of Status Quo.
The children had an amazing experience, looking at the history of drums across the ages and listening to Jeff play. He even chose some children to play his drums. The smiles on their faces at the end of the session spoke volumes and even when I was sitting at the back of the hall, you could see over 200 heads nodding in time to the music. There was fantastic engagement from the children during the loud session with lots of children telling me how they could feel the vibrations of the music through the floor!
Thank you so much Jeff for an amazing morning of music.
Have a look at our photos.
On Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th March, Sunnymede Primary Choir took part in the BSMA music festival at the Towngate Theatre in Basildon. The theme this year was 'journeys' and the songs we sang all linked to this theme.
For many of the choir, it was the first chance for them to perform on stage in front of hundreds.
As always, our choir was outstanding!
The picture of the t-shirt was designed by one of our own year 6 pupils. We had soloists and readers to introduce the songs. Sunnymede recorders performed 'My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean'.
The picture above shows us all backstage after our first performance. Well done to our amazing singers!
In the Spring Term, year 4 learn to play the Djembe Drum, thanks to the support from Essex Music Services. Our excellent tutor Emily, taught the children how to make different sounds on the drum, how to keep a strong steady pulse and taught us about different rhythms.
The children loved learning to play the djembe drum and year 3 enjoyed watching them.

Christmas at Barleylands 2023
Every year, Sunnymede KS2 Choir sing at the Barleylands Christmas Market. It's a lovely occasion and really gets everyone in the 'festive spirit'. This year, we were joined by KS1 and some of our KS2 pupils read some festive poems. One of our talented pupils, treated us to a Christmas performance on the violin. Well done everyone! Happy Christmas!
Learning a Musical Instrument
Currently, at Sunnymede Primary School we provide peripatetic music lessons for the guitar, drums, piano, violin and cello. If your child is interested in learning any of these instruments please email the school office and we will send you the relevant details. If your child would like to learn an instrument that is not on the list, let us know and we will do our best to organise that for your child.
If your child is in Key Stage 2, there is a recorder club held every Monday for all children. A recorder is essential.

The Sunnymede Soiree in Celebration of King Charles III
When learning to play an instrument, it is important to have the opportunity to perform and showcase your skills and that is exactly what our amazing music students did tonight. Performing to an audience of over one hundred adults and nearly 50 children, our musicians wowed us with their musical talents. We watched cellists, pianist, drummers, guitarists, flautists, violinists and our choir and recorder group. I would like to say a massive well done and thank you to all of the children who took part, I know how nerve-racking it can be and you should all be really proud of your achievements.

Sunnymede Recorder Group have been learning lots of songs on the recorder. As it is nearly Easter, we decided to treat the school to a rendition of 'Hot Cross Buns'. We also played a song called 'Folk Song' which splits into rounds, we played this because in our singing assembly, we have been learning to sing songs in rounds. Well done recorder team!

BSMA 2023
For two rainy nights in March, Sunnymede Junior School Choir, joined with 8 other schools from across Billericay and performed a selection of songs from a range of musicals at the Towngate Theatre in Basildon. We had readers to introduce a song, solo singers, a group of djembe drummers and a solo cellist. I feel lucky to have such a talented group of students. Their behaviour was exemplary, their performance was outstanding and their enthusiasm was infectious! Well done Choir!
