READING INTENT
To record your child's reading at home and to see comments from the school about your child's reading, we use Boom reader (an online reading record). If you are unsure how to use this, please look at the helpful parent guide or speak with your child's class teacher.
WHOLE CLASS READING APPROACH
(VIPERS)
Whole class reading is the method used to teach individual children to become equipped and ready to answer a variety of comprehension questions. Children are explicitly taught the skills of reading (outlined in the National Curriculum and the KS1 and KS2 test domains). As a parent or guardian, it would be also helpful for you to be aware of these, so that you too can practice these skills with your child when listening to your child read:
At Sunnymede, children's reading skills are taught and practised using the 'VIPERS' approach during whole class reading sessions. This allows children to develop a broad range of reading skills to ensure they 'read to learn' and advance their comprehension skills.
Here are some example questions you could ask your child when they are reading at home. The button below gives you some examples of more specific, year-group appropriate questions.

World Book Day 2024
We had a wonderful day celebrating World Book Day this year. To celebrate our first year as a primary school, we met up with children from other classes and shared some of our favourite books. We also held a potato character competition. Below are the winners from each class- can you guess who some of the characters are? Have a look at year group pages to see the amazing costumes!
We had some exceptional homework pieces brought in. Who knew a potato could evoke such creativity?!
As our first year as a primary school, we did some shared reading between the key stages. It was so wonderful to see children sharing stories they love to eachother.
Traditionally, we dress up as a book character for World Book Day. It's fantastic seeing the excitement and enjoyment on the children's (and adult's) faces!
WORLD BOOK DAY 2023
Year 3 made mosaic designs of our favourite book character. Can you tell what they are?
Within the library, clues were left for us to decide which character had come for dinner.
Winner: Dog zombie in Tom Gates
Absolutely Fantastic
Some clues left us very stumped!
